Hi Folks, one of my first jobs is to sort out the volunteer schedule and as presenting is not classed as volunteering, there are some gaps that need to be filled.
We will have to cover more for supervisors and 2nd adults because the broadcasting slots are now few and far between, hence the requirement for more presenters to be CRB checked.
Also there are tasks that need to be done on a regular basis such as ground clearance outside, maintenance of the building, cleaning and web admin etc.
Most of you are involved as volunteers but some appear not to be and that may have to change or programmes may be affected.
Please drop me a line if you can commit / commit more to supervising (especially on sunday evenings at the moment) or can assist with any of the above volunteer tasks.

What do you mean, presenting is not classed as volunteering. We do not get paid to present a show, in fact I pay to go to hcr myself...

Alan, you supervise Terrys show so your commitment is met. Presenting a show is on the basis that presenters give something back. Those are the rules and have been before I ever started at HCR. Pete will clarify that with you.

Hi chaps During previous RSL broadcasts we were able to get by for 28days with nearly all of the supervision being left to a few people willing to give up their time. When we launched, we redifined the role of 'volunteer' to make it mandetory for each presenter to support the station (This was all explained back at the pre-launch meetings in late July '08). Presenting IS NOT volunteering, if you present on HCR then you are a beneficiary of the station. If you can volunteer a particular skill like admin, or gardening etc, that's fab. Alternatively, everybody can give up a couple of hours as a supervisor if they have no particular skill to offer. It's the only fair way to do it. As for being paid to present a show, please consider that if we were in a position to pay presenters, the presenters would have very little input towards the content of their respective shows. Any presenter who feels that their involvment with HCR is preventing them from opportunities of paid employment should seriously reconsider their position. Chris and I are happy to discuss any issues or concerns.

Volunteering is still an issue and I am finding that there are the following problems occurring regularly.
1. Late notification when a show cannot be done or supervision duties carried out.
2. A reluctance to cover another supervision slot when a presenter has cancelled their own.
3. Not covering a supervision slot at all when supposed to and going home or not turning up.
4. Bringing new people in a co-presenters without consulting or notifying Pete or myself. We have to interview such members and gather personal details before we can accept new members if not just for Health and Safety reasonsl.
5. Not turning up for a show. Of course there will always be abstractions, holidays and emergencies to deal with and make allowances for. However, it appears that these issues are getting almost impossible to manage and changes will have to be made.
In future, all presenters will have to give back the same amount of time volunteering for the centre as they do broadcasting. e.g. 2 hours broadcasting = 2 hours volunteering as a Supervisor, 2nd adult, building maintenance, cleaning etc every week. No volunteering = no show.
This is not a new rule, it was in place before I ever came to the station and was well spoken about at meetings prior to the full time broadcasting licence coming into effect. It will now be rigourously applied if necessary. I hope it doesnt have to be.
Should presenters have any difficulty at all with either their Radio broadcast or Supervision/Voluntary duties, then please speak to me or Pete. I am at the Studio most Tuesdays and Thursdays and only too happy to assist.
Chris
